Moon Valley
Mainly guided walks through the colorful geology of the Cordillera de la Sal, composed of eroding salts and minerals. Canyon walls of crackling halite, warm sand dunes to run down, dramatic shades and shadows that play optical tricks – great photo opportunities.
Altiplano Lakes
Our first stop is the Salar de Atacama: gray-white salt flats interspersed with wetlands, fragile habitat to endemic and migrating birds, e.g., pink flamingos. We then slowly ascend to the highland, where deep blue lakes Miscanti and Miñiques mirror their namesake volcanoes, and visit Piedras Rojas. A day to enjoy three, stunning contrasts!
Tatio Geysers
An early start, catching the sunrise up at the geothermal field. We first spend a good three hours exploring, on foot: steaming, spouting geysers, bubbling hot mud, green, yellow and orange algae – all in an ancient yet active volcanic setting. Coming back down slowly from the slopes of the Andes, there is still a variety of flora and fauna to observe, and great scenery to enjoy.
